Sources of the decline of manufacturing in large metropolitan areas
时间:2017-11-04

【摘要】Prior to 1970 the population of the United States was becoming increasingly concentrated in metropolitan areas, with the largest of these metropolitan areas generally experiencing the highest growth rates. As is widely documented, this historical pattern was reversed between 1970 and 1980 as population began to deconcentrate and the largest metropolitan areas in every region of the country experienced a decline in population growth. In addition to this deconcentration of population, manufacturing activity also became less concentrated. The reasons for this turnaround in economic activity have been the subject of much concern, particularly in the Manufacturing Belt where a number of the largest SMSAs have experienced population loss.

This paper examines the sources of the relative decline of manufacturing in large metropolitan areas in the United States over the period 1959-1978. A growth accounting framework is used to identify the contributions of capital accumulation, labor growth, and total factor productivity growth to the decline.
